13A Reading Reflection #1

1) You read about an entrepreneur:
  • I read about the Wright Brothers, by David McCullough

  • What surprised you the most?
    • What surprised me the most about these two brothers was their connection & their ability to persist on the same vision after so many failed attempts, and public criticism shows how one should never give up, it will be difficult at times but they eventually took off and revolutionized the world. They invented modern aeronautics per se.

  • What about the entrepreneur did you most admire?
    • Their determination, the flying machine they made did not get much attention at first because some other inventor's expensive flying machine had failed, the media was all over it. They basically struggled to get something so meaningful as is airplanes to be seen. Besides all odds, the flying machine changed the world.

  • What about the entrepreneur did you least admire?
    • Overall their personalities worked well with each other. However, I do not like how Orville and Wilbur fought so hard to keep their invention to themselves & with such greed, I believed they did not completely see the extent of the massive change they caused.
  • Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it?
    • The brothers encountered many adversities, I mean in that time what they thought off was seen as crazy or out of this world, they received a lot of criticism from bigger players in that time and from the public as well.
2) What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited?
    • Their commitment to they're work and consistency, the brothers kept working on aeronautics their entire lives. Wilbur died but was happy to be recognized and they were finally innovator for the US army.

3) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
The fact that the brothers tried to tell the world, not much attention was placed on them. it made me wonder how different views we all have and how media can distortion events.

4) If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?
  • What were you thinking when you noticed everyone looking at you people like you were crazy?
    • This question would be useful to see how they envisioned themselves in a world that saw things so narrow
  • Why so focused on patent infringement if it was something that revolutionized the world?
    • I want to ask this question to gain some insight into how the brothers, especially Orville saw how his machine revolutionized the world. I do not think they saw the complete big picture

5) For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion?
  • The brother's opinion on hard work was that it paid off. Even though they had around 10 years of failures, struggles and many many failed ventures they made it. These brothers had a big dream and they accomplished it.
    • I believe I share that opinion, however, in this era we should be aware of when we practice hard work, to when people might take advantage of us. The entrepreneurial environment can be very hostile
